Chest making workshop at Braythwayte Manor

Need a new feast chest or somewhere to hide your mundane bits and pieces at events? Come and make a simple 6 board chest based on examples found on the Mary Rose.

Ed will be running a weekend workshop at Braythwayte Manor to help you make your own wooden chest on the weekend of 18-20th March ....yes, that's very soon.

Book here.

Since there is a limit on the resources available, this workshop is limited to 6 chest makers with priority given to new-comers and those who have not yet been able to attend one of these workshops.

That does not mean that those long-standing members in the SCA cannot come - it just means that if there are 6 new-comers wanting to attend you may need to wait for 'round 2'.

Cost:

Workshop (includes all materials) + food (breakfasts and evening meal): $50

Food only (for partners -not making a chest) :$15

Accommodation:

We have one spare bedroom + some crash space in the lounge + 1 campervan (sleeps 2) + loads of tent space.

Itinery:

Arrive anytime after 6pm on Friday 18th.

Saturday after early breakfast 7:30 - 8am, head off to school workshops leaving 8:30 latest.

You will need to provide your own lunch. A trip to the local bakery for a pie is the usual though.

Back to Braythwayte Manor for dinner and relaxation. (Remember to bring togs if you want to hop in the spa pool)

Sunday: Finishing off chests in workshop (possibly at Braythwayte Manor - depending on Saturday's progress)

Your chest will be made from pine, partly for availabilty and affordability of the timber and partly because oak chests are a 2 -person lift when full of stuff!

There will be options to personalise your chest by using different types of hinge, different shapes around the base, whether or not you include a till (small built-in tray at one end just under the lid).

Carved, incised or painted decoration can also make your chest more spiffy than others!!
