The Game for St Sebs 2020

The Hidden Hoard

The previous Lord of Braythwayte Manor was a widely travelled and famous merchant adventurer. Before leaving on his last voyage to the East he buried a hoard of valuable items in the grounds of his estate for safe keeping.

Alas, Lord Braythwayte never returned and the Manor and Lordship passed to his wayward son Edward.

Recently a piece of parchment was found nailed to a high beam in the kitchen. On it were 3 clues and a diagram that suggested another location. So far 11 clues have been discovered.

Lord Edward has searched in vain for his father’s treasure and he now calls upon those assembled here this day to help solve the mystery.

If you find the hoard then it is yours! However, Lord Ed plans to raise funds by selling clues to search parties. Being almost as devious as his late father, he has made the clues increasingly expensive.

The Manor estate will be opened to searchers at 12 noon on Sunday until lunch.

The Rules

Teams:

You will need to work in teams of 2 or 3. All teams of 3 must include at least one child (up to 15 years old).

Acquiring money to buy clues:

To buy clues you will need money! Each search team will start with 20 gold. A further 20 gold will be paid to each team at breakfast on Sunday.

The first clue costs 4 gold, the second clue costs 6 gold, the third 8 gold and so on.

To get more money you can:

1.

Trade goods or services

2.

Gamble

3.

Win money at the archery games or tournaments

4.

Earn a reward for helpful service given to one of the stewards, the chief cook, the chief baker or the proprietor of the Coffee House.

5.

Win a challenge against someone from another team

6.

Complete one of the event challenges (See the list at Adler’s Coffee House)

Buying and looking after clues:

For each clue purchased the team will receive a clue token which can be exchanged for an actual clue at 12 noon on Sunday.

Clue tokens must be worn tied loosely with a simple bow to a belt (or similar) behind the wearer’s back in an accessible and stealable way. Failure to do so may result in the clue(s) being confiscated and perhaps given to the person reporting the infringement.

Clue tokens must be evenly distributed (as well as possible) amongst all of the members of the team at all times.

No one can hold more gold than the cost of the team’s next clue.

Since your team starts with 20 gold this means that you will need to buy your first clue straight away!!

Stealing clues from other teams:

Successfully steal a clue token from behind someone’s back and it is yours… YAY!

However, if you are caught in the attempt then your team must forfeit 2 of their clue tokens.

If the person you are stealing from catches you then you give the 2 forfeited clue tokens to them.

If you are dobbed in by someone else, then they get one token and your intended victim also gets one token.

Trading goods or services:

Only goods made on site during the event may be traded.

Tokens may not be traded.

If you are at all uncertain as to the legitimacy of a service you wish to provide then check with Ed first!

Challenges:

You may challenge someone from another team to a challenge.

All challenges MUST be accepted and attempted within a reasonable time, say within 30 mins.

FIRST, the value of the challenge is agreed between both parties.

THEN the nature of the challenge is set by the person being challenged.

When selecting the nature of a challenge you may play to your strengths but you should also choose something that the challenger might reasonably hope to win.

The Search:

At 12 noon on Sunday tokens will be exchanged for clues.

Teams will have 10 minutes to place a marker where they think the hoard is buried.

The team with the lowest number of clues will go first, the team with the most clues goes last.

Important!!!!

No team member may in any way assist or collude with a member of another team.

There are to be no alliances between teams.

If you no longer want to play then you distribute any tokens or gold to the remaining members of your team.

If the team wishes to withdraw then all gold and tokens are returned to the steward.
