Cluain Council Meeting 21st April 2018

 Start time: 2.30pm

Finish time: 3.10pm

Present: Sue Whitby, Roger Win, Liz Brodie, Michelle Deakin & Trent Deakin

Apologies: Dave Whitby (Ed) – not very apologetic since he was enjoying South Island

Previous minutes approved by Roger, seconded by Trent.

 Officers’ Reports:

Reeve – Roger

Currently $3923.19 in Cluain’s bank account, with everything paid to date. St Sebastian’s made a profit of approximately $390.

The commentary period is in place for Nathanael to take over as reeve and as this appointment has the backing of Thorald it looks hopeful that Roger will finally be relieved of the role.

Marshall – Roger

There are 9 fighters training at practices regularly now, although Roger is unable to join in at present due to a non-SCA injury. The second hand helm and 30mm polypropylene for making practice swords have been purchased as agreed at the previous meeting. Roger is supervising the making of armour.

Fighters’ practice needs to be advertised on the Cluain website homepage.

A&S Officer – Liz

Researching period shapes for cooking knives.

Picked up 10 kits for kumihimo braid making.

Chatelaine – Sue

We have another new member, from Tauranga area.

Consideration is to be given to A&S kits for newcomers, e.g. lucet cords, finger-loop braiding, pewter casting (possibly using cuttlefish for moulds, as discussed).

A replacement chatelaine is needed by July, so will be advertised for soon.

Keep reading… you can do it!

Herald – Trent

Settling in but there has been no handover from Alex yet. Trent to chase this up.

Liz & Rog will pass the herald tabard on to Trent.

  Matters Arising from Previous Minutes:

Demo at Waikato Show:

The 11.30am half hour demo had more audience than the 3.30pm slot. There were 6 or 7 fighters in each demo. Liz handed Cluain leaflets out to a few people, including someone in a wheelchair. Thoughts for future demo’s:

·         More preparation for the fighting would help it run more efficiently.

·         It would be great to have 1 member to talk about the demo to the audience and another member or two to hand out leaflets.

·         We need to update the business card with the Facebook page address.

School demo at Papamoa College

Trent, Michelle and Ethan did 2 sessions in 45 minutes, presenting to around 200 students each time. They talked about clothing, utensils, armour and processes, and demonstrated dancing and fighting. (Finishing with the fighting to help it be memorable). Some of the children and teachers seemed keen to know more.

The first two people from different households to comment on these minutes on the Cluain council e-mail list will receive a sweet treat.

Upcoming events:

Midwinter solstice fire festival:

There has been enough interest expressed to make this event viable. An outline of the proposal was presented by Sue. A recommendation to keep any pagan or religious names out of the title was made so that it appeals to more people, particularly newcomers.

Next Hastilude:

Venue to be arranged, either in Hamilton area or Rotorua, on 19th May.
