Labour Weekend Living History

Come and spend 3 days in the late 14th Century with like-minded folk as we set up camp in a lush woodland clearing at Braythwayte Manor on the northern shore of Lake Rotorua. Sleep in your pavilion, or under the stars, and awake to the smell of wood smoke from the camp fires and the bread oven. This is intended to be a time to relax and enjoy good company so you can do your own thing or get together with others for music, discussion, archery, sewing, whittling or whatever pleases you at the time.

Bookings now closed

The emphasis for this camp is on living history so there will be no gas or electricity for the 3 days. There will be a full meal plan with all food stored, prepared and cooked in the camp. This will be labour intensive so everyone will be expected to lend a hand when they see a need.

The main camp area will be as authentically period as we can make it with no plastic or modern items visible at any time. This extends to glass bottles, cell phones, modern tools, torches, etc etc. Yes, this is going beyond what is normal for the SCA! - If you cannot get through the day without a bag of marshmallows then you will need to consume them privately out of sight in your pavilion and not bring them over to the fire to toast them! Hopefully everyone will enter into the spirit of the event and make it a weekend to remember.

There will however be a couple of concessions as we cannot think of a practical alternative:

1. As we do not have a cow that can be milked each day we will arrange for someone to go and ‘milk’ the ‘cow’ in the ’barn’ twice a day!

2. Toilet facilities will be as usual since we cannot dig long drops (they would be ‘short splashes’ if we tried)

Plastic tents are welcome on the back lawn as usual.

The weather will happen, just as it has done for centuries. The event will go ahead regardless.

Please book early so we can get an idea of how many people are up for this.
